Beautiful Weather for a Bike Friendly Town!

The mild weather has all of the community out and about this week!  Did you know that Swarthmore train station has a nice row of seldom-vacant bicycle racks?  Since the whole town is only one mile east-west and two miles north-south is there any reason not to enjoy the chance for a bike ride on the way to work?  (Be sure to wear your helmet!!!)

Best Local Yard Sale!

You probably can’t see it – but the banner says the Rutledge Community Yard Sale is scheduled for September 8th!

It’s that time of year again!  Rutledge Borough is hosting the annual Community Yard Sale on Saturday, September 8th!  Score a great deal on toys, books, and assorted goods!  The borough is 4 blocks by 4 blocks – all level with sidewalks , so it’s a fun opportunity to walk the town even with small children or a big stroller!

Rutledge Borough is known to insiders as “The Best Kept Secret in Delaware County” – this tiny borough has beautiful Victorian architecture, great Wallingford-Swarthmore schools, sidewalks, a park/playground, and very attractive taxes! See the Rutledge info on the “What’s It Like?” tab of this website!

Wishing Tree!

The wishing tree is on the right side of the photo – you can just see the wishes hanging from its branches!

Did you know that Swarthmore has its own wishing tree?  Danielle Mervine and Iza Hinkson (ages 12 and 14) of Swarthmore created the tree and have left materials for you to leave a wish of your own!  Paper, markers, string and instructions are at the tree waiting for you at Paulson Park!  (Paulson Park is the small park at the corner of Rutgers and Strath Haven avenues, in front of CADES.)

These images were so cool I just had to re-post! And of course I love to share any news about our beloved Co-op!

Swarthmore Co-op Blog

This October, the Co-op will celebrate it’s 75th Anniversary. As we plan & prep for the big bash, we reminisce back to the year of 1937…

… when this was the original Co-op store front,

… when “Sing, Sing, Sing” by Benny Goodman was at the top of the charts,
… when gas was 10 cents a gallon, (oh, how we wish this was still true!!)
… when radio was at its prime,
… when iPhones, texting, social media, and email didn’t exist,
… and when baggy pants and mini skirts weren’t seen in anyone’s closet.
How times have changed since 1937! Sometimes we think for the bad, but most of the time, we think for the good!! It’s easy to lust for the life of simplicity 1937 seems to project. A life before the constant rings and bings of cell phones, a life before eating on the…

A Swarthmore Tradition becomes an empty lot…

ImageThe Countryside Deli, a favorite town eatery at the corner of Yale & Kenyon Avenues was consumed by fire last Christmas – rumor says that it happened while meals were being prepared for a local shelter. Their delicious sandwiches were named after the streets of the town and famous campus sites.  They were host to a bustling crowd from in town and all around.  I will never forget squeezing between the close set tables of merry patrons, hoping not to knock down any of the unapologetic array of obscenely kitschy items lining all the walls for sale: tiny Santas and villages and old timey bicycles – the kind of objects and ornaments you used to find at the silo at Linvilla Orchards (another classic destination, destroyed by fire in my lifetime). Today, I drove past and saw that suddenly even the shell of the building is gone. But in my heart the parking lot will be forever clogged, the sandwiches exquisite, and the company divine.
