A gentle glow ushers out the holiday season in Swarthmore

Luminaria

My iPhone photo-taking skills can’t capture the haunting loveliness of the luminaria lighting our street!

Each year Swarthmoreans purchase over 18,000 luminaria.  At 5pm on New Year’s Day the candles are lit and the streets are transformed. Proceeds from the sales of these white sand-filled bags (complete with long-burning candles) benefit A Better Chance Strath Haven (ABC).  ABC is a non-profit that gives highly motivated minority students the opportunity to attend Strath Haven High School, including housing at the Boys’ House or Girls’ House in Swarthmore. For more information about ABC please visit them here!
